The final night of Drake’s Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour was a memorable night for several reasons; the most obvious being that his newly freed Young Money mentor, Lil Wayne, surprised fans — and Drizzy — with an impromptu turn at the mic.

Weezy cameo aside, Drake also expressed his pride about the tour overall, especially how his team has honed its craft over the course of the three-month trek.

“I think about where we were four or five months ago, and what we were doing, and I’m just so proud of everybody around me,” Drizzy said in a sit-down with MTV News following the tour’s final stop in Las Vegas Saturday. “The band, adding … my back-up singer, she’s doing great, [she's] from Toronto, you know I gotta shout her out. Everyone involved has just grown.”

Looking back on how the tour was staged, Drake added that he’s satisfied with the show he gave to fans across the country.

“When I look at pictures and I look at clips online, visually… it looks great, it looks like what I wanted it to look like,” he said. With the successful tour behind him, Drizzy maintained the he’s ready for a new challenge.

“For tonight to be the last night, I’m gonna retire that set and that vision and the name, Light Dreams and Nightmares, and I’m gonna go onto the next thing,” he said. The “Find Your Love” crooner added that he’s glad to have Weezy back in the mix as he embarks on his next endeavor.

“I can’t wait to grow even more, especially with Wayne being out,” he grinned. “It’s gonna be a great year.”

With Drizzy’s tour over and Wayne back on the scene, the Toronto MC said the next step for the Young Money hitmakers is hitting the lab to crank out another banger. For fans that need a timetable outlining when the next Weezy/Drizzy collabo might hit the streets, the MC added a studio date could be just around the corner.

“I would be super surprised if I didn’t get a phone call saying, ‘Let’s go to the studio,’ ” Drake said.

Last October, Lil Wayne put down his guitar and came back to his microphone, making a triumphant return to the mixtape market with the release of the street-oriented No Ceilings mixtape. Wayne’s underground opus was a commercial success, spawning radio singles while paving a direct path for other mixtape-based projects from his rap peers, including Fabolous and Jim Jones.

As was the case with Young Money partner-in-rhyme Drake on So Far Gone, fans salivated over Weezy’s dominating wordplay on a wide selection of beats. But according to Drizzy Drake, Wayne’s reunion with his core audience was a direct result of his isolation from hip-hop while recording the rock fused album Rebirth, which almost left the mixtape in limbo.

Taking a page from the Dwayne Carter playbook, Drake said he chose a path similar to his mentor’s, leaving close to no room for creative input from outsiders while in the process of recording his upcoming R&B mixtape It’s Never Enough.

“[Wayne] had been doing a lot of rock music for Rebirth, and it stemmed from people being like, ‘When are we gonna hear some rap? When are you gonna rap? When are you gonna rap?’ ” Drake told us in Miami. “Wayne doesn’t like to be told what he should be doing, so he just kept doing rock music, like, ‘Watch, I’m gonna show you. This rock thing is going to work.’ And it does work for him. I think whatever he chooses to do works, but I think he got to that point that I would get to as well, that I’m getting to now working on this R&B tape.”

Drake said he wasn’t around for the bulk of the No Ceilings recording sessions, but the end result was the radio smash “I’m Single,” which originally featured the crooner on the hook, sans Weezy.

“I wasn’t really around much for the No Ceilings sessions. That was around the time in my career when things were picking up from a touring standpoint for me,” Drake recalled. “So I was never able to go and sit for a couple of days and be in his presence.”

Staying in sync with releasing material around the holidays, Drake is plotting to drop It’s Never Enough in time for Christmas, following his Light Dreams & Nightmares Tour.

‘It wasn’t shot the way I would have shot it,’

Anthony Mandler says of Lil Wayne footage shot before he came onboard as director. Drake’s “Miss Me” video is the third project between the rapper and director Anthony Mandler (Jay-Z, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige), following their work together on the Toronto star’s “Over” and “Find Your Love.”

According to Mandler, he and Drake are establishing an aesthetic via their collaborations. Mandler said that “Over” was about re-establishing Drake visually and “Find Your Love” was intended to make Drake the lead in story.

With “Miss Me,” however, the director said the video was a particular challenge because co-star Lil Wayne’s footage was shot prior to Mandler coming onboard.

“It wasn’t shot the way I would have shot it,” Mandler explained to MTV News. “So I had to come up with a world where I had ultimate control. I think with Drake, we’re always looking for overarching themes. We’re always looking for bigger themes to hang our hat on. With ‘Miss Me,’ what was interesting to me was not the idea of ‘miss me because Wayne was gong to jail.’ Because it was deeper than that. It was the attainability verses the unattainability. And how stars and people who are public figures are expected to sit on a platform and be grabbed and watched and photographed and controlled. Video after the jump.

Drake is doing it big right now. The Toronto MC’s debut album, Thank Me Later, is platinum, he’s about to headline his upcoming Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour and he’s just notched 1 million Twitter followers. With that type of success, there’s probably very little that is out of the lyricist’s reach. But Drake revealed that there is one thing he wants that he hasn’t been able to secure yet: snagging Wiz Khalifa as his tourmate.

“I had a little bit of a fan moment, I tried to get this third cat on my tour,” Drizzy told more than 30,000 fans who logged on to check him out live on Ustream on Thursday (August 19). The broadcast came on the heels of the premiere of his “Miss Me” video with Lil Wayne.

Apparently, Drake was keeping his plan to add another act to his tour on the low. “You know we was trying to get Wiz on the tour,” he said, simultaneously informing listeners and his team who were hanging out in the room and clearly didn’t know what he was referring to. The MC then addressed his fans once again: “Hopefully, the Light Dreams [and] Nightmares Tour, depending on what city we go to, it’ll be Clipse, Bun B and Wiz Khalifa. That’s what I’m hoping. I don’t know, maybe I spoke too soon.”

Clipse were already confirmed to join the Young Money MC on the road, along with Houston O.G. Bun B, when the tour kicks off on September 20 in Miami. The chart-topping singer and rapper asked the “Hottest Breakthrough MC” directly about possibly joining the fall tour.

If Wiz by any chance watches this, you gotta make some calls for me and make this happen,” Drake said. “We got that young energy right now, we need to go out here and kill these people.

In addition to making his plea for a more Taylor Gang-friendly Light Dreams tour lineup, the MC said he really wants to work with producer 9th Wonder on the follow-up to Thank Me Later.

9th, can we start this next album please?” Drake asked. “Because I know you in the studio,” he added, urging the North Carolina artist to work on his sophomore effort, which Drizzy hopes to release by next year. The rapper also revealed that he initially wanted the ex-Little Brother beatsmith to contribute to Later, but wasn’t able to make it happen. “I’d greatly appreciate it if we could get some work done because I know last time we weren’t able to do that.

While his touring and production rosters are still up in the air, Drake said he could confirm to fans that one particular event is a definite: a homecoming concert for Lil Wayne.

The momentum from the young MC from Canada has yet to let up, as Drizzy returns with a new video for the hit song “Miss Me”, featuring his mentor and temporary resident of the State of New York, Lil’ Wayne.

The video was directed once again by Anthony Mandler, who has directed every video from Drake‘s platinum selling album Thank Me Later.

In all, the video is interesting in a sense that it can be defined based on your own opinon of either Drake or Mandler’s creativity.

To his great credit, Lil Wayne’s done a spectacular job of keeping this whole Rikers thing lighthearted. There’s the grateful blog posts, the ready-for-radio leaks, the truly insightful sports analysis, and a steady stream of cheery phone calls (e.g., “I got the penthouse suite up here at Rikers”). His team promised there would be a plan to maintain Weezy’s visibility while locked up, and they’ve executed it impressively as they work up to his fall release and a new EP, I’m Not a Human Being. Of course, the dude is still in jail, which means conversations like the one he had with Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 last night are inevitable. After running through all the support he’s been getting from his fans, Wayne talks about staying in touch with the outside world:

I call Drake at least once a week, but I actually call three or four times a week, but he only picks up for me once a week,” the MC said with a laugh … Put in this position, I just feel like every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail. I don’t have nothing else to do but talk to you, and that might not be what you want to do at the time. I don’t know if that’s just a conscious thing, but … I always feel like I’m bothering. I call Mack Maine every single day, and I know I get on his nerves, but he answers every single time.

There’s nothing tragic about it, but Wayne sketching out some of the minor details of his isolated everyday life is pretty crushing nonetheless. Drake, pick up the damn phone! SOURCE

Drake knows a thing or two about having a loyal fanbase: His following propelled him to a #1 album in June with Thank Me Later. But when it comes to the SoundScan charts, 2010 has belonged to Marshall Mathers. Eminem’s Recovery is #1 for the fifth straight week and looks to be an unbeatable monster right now — he’s close to 2 million copies sold. Drake expects his good friend Lil Wayne to have that same success when he’s released from prison and resumes his career. Much like Eminem and Jay-Z, Drizzy asserts, Weezy has a core that has unconditional love for him.

“I think it’s so rare that an artist comes along in our generation that has a loyal following no matter what — I think Eminem has it,” Drake explained last week on the Atlanta set of his “Fancy” video. “I think Jay-Z has it, although he’s never faltered enough to test it. Jay is almost like the perfect guy. Media-wise, there’s never been a true test of your fans staying with you. Eminem has had gone through a couple of ups and downs and his fans were with him no matter what.

“I think Wayne is that guy,” he continued. “I know Wayne is the next guy, after the two I just named, that has that unconditional, no matter what. You get caught with this and you go to jail. You make little life errors that people should never find out about, but because we’re in the public eye, everyone knows everything. Wayne has those fans.”

Drake told Mixtape Daily that during a recent call, Wayne rapped some verses from Tha Carter IV over the phone — and the world better watch out!
