Drake Opens Up About His ‘Crush’ On Nicki Minaj

Posted on June 14, 2010 • 0 Comments

Young Money stars Nicki Minaj and Drake are two of the hottest MCs in hip-hop, and their relationship has some thinking that the pair are hooking up in ways beyond a label affiliation. The stars were candid about their feelings for each other in recent interviews with MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown” — and addressed rumors that their relationship isn’t strictly platonic.

“Me and Nicki have a really playful relationship,” Drake told DJ Envy. “When I was on tour … I saw Nicki for the first time and, like, literally fell in love. She had this snap-back hat on that said ‘Minaj.’ She used to wear that every single day. She was like a theater student and she was so cold at rapping.”

Drake — who rushed to Minaj’s defense last week after Lil’ Kim said some untoward things about her — said that before breaking through, he had to contend with her somewhat icy demeanor. “I remember one of the first nights that we were out in Miami and I went to Jerry’s [Famous Deli]. I was like [to Minaj], ‘You want food, you hungry?,’ and she was like, ‘Yeah, I want some food.’ I was like, ‘I’m in, we gon’ eat food together.’ I came to her door and she took the food and shut the door in my face! I was just like, ‘Man, this is gonna be a long road for us.’ “

In an interview with DJ Envy over the weekend, Drake revealed why he stood up for Nicki Minaj after she was dissed by Lil Kim:

I feel like Lil’ Kim is a G in the game. I feel like you’re a part of an era that’s classic, that we’ll never forget as young kids, me and Nick. You don’t have to do that. You don’t have to get onstage and tell people to pay homage, that’s a given. I’ve watched Nicki pay homage time and time again. I didn’t respect that, whoever else was onstage with her, I didn’t respect that at all.

You just wearing your heart on your sleeve. You’re showing that you’re upset. Nobody’s done that to me yet. I would never expect Jay or [Kanye] to get onstage and be like, “Pay homage to me. You need to respect me”. They command my respect with their music and talent. I feel that’s signs you’re just losing it. I really did take that personally. That bothered me. I really don’t get caught up with the Twitter and Internet stuff but I did see it. And I feel like you’re supposed to be a G. That just wasn’t G to me at all.

After Drake dissed Lil’ Kim, Nicki turned around laughing, then came back and hugged him. He told her “I love you.” Then he left the stage.

Nicki Minaj may have been featured on mixtapes for years, but she’s just getting around to releasing her first single. The song “Massive Attack” was just released earlier this week and today Nicki Minaj debuted her music video. directed by Hype Williams.

The video includes Kanye West’s girlfriend Amber Rose driving Nicki Minaj around in a pink Ferrari in the desert. Later on, Nicki thrashes around in the jungle wearing a hot green wig. I give props to Nicki Minaj for having her own style and even more credit to the guy with the dislocating elbows! Other than that, I just don’t get it.

Wow, I feel like my mom having said that! But seriously, I don’t. I can hardly hear what Nicki Minaj is rapping about and just can’t comprehend what’s going on. Is it just me? What was all the buzz around it anyway? Does anyone actually like Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack” video???

Also, I heard Drake was supposed to be in this. He’s nowhere to be seen as far as I can tell.

Mixtape Daily still goes, though. Today, Lil Wayne’s gorgeous It girl, Nicki Minaj, makes her return to these parts. She has a few stories to share about her and the crew getting down onstage and off and what they’ve been cooking up in the studio.

Nicki Minaj and Drake roll like brothers and sisters. So it was no surprise when Nicki told us about a playful spat they had on tour at the Young Money Presents: America’s Most Wanted Music Festival.

“Actually I think Drake is wack and I don’t think he deserves [his accolades],” she joked. “I’m sorry. We just had a fight in the back. I was about to punch him dead in his face. [One of his mangers] Cortez intervened.”

Minaj got a little more serious, clarifying that she and Drake do not have any gripes with one another. They are thick as thieves.
